The River Within/El Río Desde Adentro; a binational collaboration/ una colaboración binacional
Rocheleau secured a state council arts grant to fund the project, Avianca Airlines donated flights for the Medellín artists travel to Providence, Rhode Island. The collective lived and worked together for a month creating the art installation along a 1/4 mile segment of the Providence River. Gloria Posada, Carlos Uribe, with Ahní Rocheleau finalized the previous months’ interchange, arranged for donations of branches from the City of Providence’s tree trimming program, in the studio burlap-wrapped over a hundred 11-foot-tall branches to protect the city’s waterfront railings, and tied the “sentinels” along the east and west side of the river to honor the water and draw attention to the correlations between the Medellin and Providence Rivers: chemically-toxic river bottom silts from centuries of manufacturing, the canalization of what were once natural rivers, and the disruption of the community’s social fabric resulting from paving over large segments of the rivers.
